The Qur’an requires Muslims to fast during the month of Ramadan from sunrise to sunset. The first module of this course will introduce you to Ramadan and investigate the epidemiology of fasting as well as consider cultural sensitivity versus cultural competence in a practical setting. Module 2 focusses on the pathophysiology of fasting, lifestyle changes and risk factors. The third module looks more closely at the importance of pre-Ramadan assessments and risk stratification and presents study data from clinical trials that have been carried out in this area. Finally, module 4 will drill down into these clinical trials in more depth both in type 1 diabetes and in type 2 diabetes and discuss the advice that healthcare professionals can be offering those patients who wish to fast and who can do so safely.
